Types of Najasat in Islamic Fiqh
Understanding Najasat (Impurities) and Their Types
Types of Najasat
In Islamic jurisprudence, Najasat (impurities) are divided into two main types:
Najasat Ghaleeza (Major Impurities)
This type of impurity has strict rulings, and cleaning it is mandatory if it falls in a large quantity.
Examples:
- Feces
- Flowing blood
- Meat of Haram animals
- Alcohol
(Reference: Dar Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar)
Najasat Khafifa (Minor Impurities)
This type of impurity has lighter rulings, and cleaning it depends on the quantity. Sometimes it is Sunnah or Wajib.
Examples:
- Urine of Halal animals
- Urine of a horse
- Droppings of certain birds
(Reference: Common Fiqh books)
Rulings of Najasat Ghaleeza
Issues:
- If more than one Dirham of impurity falls on clothes or body, cleaning it is mandatory. Salah on unclean clothes is invalid, and intentional prayer incurs sin.
- If the quantity equals one Dirham, cleaning is Wajib, and Salah must be repeated.
- If the quantity is less than one Dirham, cleaning is Sunnah; Salah is valid but not recommended otherwise.
Examples:
- Feces, dung, urine
- Flowing blood, pus, vomit
- Menstrual, postpartum, and Istihadah blood
- Semen, Madhi & Wadi
- Urine of nursing children
- Flowing blood of dry-land animals
- Meat and fat of carrion
- Haram livestock: dog, lion, fox, cat, rat, donkey, mule, elephant
- Pig meat, dung, urine
- Horse’s gall
- Alcohol and intoxicants
- Milk of Haram animals
(Reference: Dar Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar, Bihar al-Shariah)
Rulings of Najasat Khafifa
- If impurity falls on less than 1/4th of a cloth/body part, Salah is valid.
- If it covers 1/4th or more, Salah without cleaning is invalid.
- Urine of Halal animals, horse urine, and certain bird droppings fall under Khafifa.
(Reference: Common Fiqh books)
Quantity and Form of Najasat
- Thick impurities (feces, dung) – measured by weight; one Dirham ≈ 4.5 Masha.
- Thin impurities (urine, alcohol) – measured by area; one Dirham ≈ depth of a palm.
- If impurity falls into water or vinegar, even one drop contaminates the whole.
(Reference: Common Fiqh books, Dar Mukhtar)
