Guidance for Women: What Breaks the Fast – Islamic rulings infographic for Ramadan (Qaza, Kaffarah & detailed fiqh guide)

This article contains important jurisprudential (Fiqh) rulings regarding fasting. It explains in detail the circumstances under which a fast is broken, when only a makeup fast (Qaza) is required, and when the fast remains valid. All these rulings are derived from authentic Fiqh books such as Durr-e-Mukhtar, Alamgiri, Fatawa Razawiya, and other reliable sources, presented in an easy-to-understand manner specifically for the guidance of women so that every Muslim sister can understand the correct rulings.

⚖️ Situations Where Only Qaza (Makeup Fast) is Mandatory

🟢 Does intercourse during sleep break the fast?
If a woman is sleeping during her fast and intercourse is performed with her, in this case, only Qaza is mandatory, and no Kaffarah (expiation) is required. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🟢 Does the fast break if the assumption of dawn (Suhoor time) is wrong?
If someone ate or drank thinking that dawn had not yet occurred, but later found out that it was already morning, only Qaza is mandatory (i.e., one fast must be kept in its place later). (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🟢 Does intentional eating after eating forgetfully require Kaffarah?
If someone ate or drank by mistake (forgetting the fast) or vomited and then assumed the fast was over, and subsequently ate or drank intentionally, only Qaza is obligatory, not Kaffarah. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🟢 Does breaking the fast before sunset require Kaffarah?
If someone broke the fast assuming the sun had set, while in reality, the sun had not yet set, in this case also, only Qaza is mandatory, not Kaffarah. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

❌ Acts That Break the Fast

🔴 Does inserting medicine or objects into the private parts break the fast?
During the fast (Ramadan or otherwise), if a woman inserts medicine, dry or wet cotton, or cloth into the urinary/private area for a need in such a way that it completely disappears into the internal part (Farj-e-Dakhil), the fast is broken. However, if it is tied to a cloth and placed such that one end of the cloth remains outside the Farj-e-Dakhil, the fast will not be broken even if it disappears into the outer layer (Farj-e-Kharij). (Durr-e-Mukhtar etc.)

🔴 Does the fast break if medicine enters through a cloth?
If dry medicine is tied in a cloth and placed, and it filters through the cloth to reach the internal part, or if the medicine is liquid and drips from the cloth to the inside, or if the cloth moves completely inside due to movement, the fast will be broken in all these cases. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🔴 Does swallowing tears or sweat break the fast?
If tears or sweat enter the mouth and are swallowed, and the quantity is very small (one or two drops), the fast does not break. However, if the quantity is so much that its saltiness is felt throughout the mouth, the fast will be broken. (Alamgiri)

🔴 Does putting medicine in the nose or oil in the ears break the fast?
If medicine is inhaled through the nostrils or oil is put into the ear (or enters on its own), the fast will be broken. However, if water enters the ear or is put into it, the fast remains intact. (Alamgiri)

🔴 Does swallowing a wet thread break the fast?
If a thread is passed through the mouth to moisten it while twisting it, and this is done repeatedly, the fast is not broken. But if some moisture separates from the thread and remains in the mouth and is swallowed with saliva, the fast is broken. Similarly, if a colored thread is kept in the mouth and the saliva becomes colored and is swallowed, the fast is broken. (Jawhara, Alamgiri)

🔴 Does water going down the throat during rinsing (Gargling) break the fast?
If water accidentally goes down the throat or reaches the brain through the nose while rinsing (provided the person remembers they are fasting), the fast will be broken. However, if the person had forgotten they were fasting, the fast will not break even if done intentionally. (Alamgiri)

🔴 Does swallowing blood after tooth extraction break the fast?
If blood goes down the throat after a tooth extraction, even if it happens during sleep, the fast will be broken and its Qaza will be mandatory. (Durr-ul-Muhtar)

🔴 Does inhaling smoke break the fast?
If incense (Agarbatti) or any fragrance was burning and the person brought their mouth close to pull the smoke into the nose, or intentionally made the smoke reach the throat (no matter the source or method), the fast is broken. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🔴 Does inserting a finger or oil break the fast?
Inserting a dry finger does not break the fast. However, if the finger is wet with some moisture and that moisture reaches the internal part, or if the finger is re-inserted while wet, the fast will be broken. Similarly, if moisture reaches inside via water, oil, milk, ghee, or saliva, the fast is invalidated. Likewise, if a woman drips water or oil into her private parts, the fast is broken. (Durr-e-Mukhtar, Alamgiri)

🔴 Does cleaning the ears break the fast?
Using a needle or any object to remove earwax does not break the fast because it does not reach the brain. (Maraqi al-Falah)

🔴 Does using too much water during cleansing (Istinja) break the fast?
If cleansing is done so excessively that water reaches the place where an enema is placed, the fast is broken. Such exaggeration is not required as it carries a risk of severe illness. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🔴 Is the fast valid after eating Betel Leaf (Paan)?
If a woman slept after eating Paan and made the intention for the fast in the morning, and only a few particles remained in the teeth, the fast is valid. However, if there was such an effect (residue) in the mouth that was likely to go down the throat, the fast will not be valid. (Fatawa Razawiya)

🔴 Do sour burps from overeating break the fast?
If sour burps occur during the day due to eating too much during Suhoor, it does not break the fast. (Fatawa Razawiya)

🔴 Does an injection break the fast?
Generally, injections given in the body (which are not for nutrition or strength) do not break the fast because they do not enter through the stomach. However, it is better to avoid nutritional injections.

🔴 Does using a Miswak break the fast?
Using a Miswak while fasting is permissible and even a Sunnah, regardless of the time of day, provided its taste or particles do not reach the throat.

Ramadan Fasting Guide – Valid & Invalid Acts

🟢 If the lips become wet with saliva while talking and it is swallowed, or if drool drips from the mouth but the string did not break and it was pulled back and swallowed, or if mucus comes into the nose (even if it comes outside but was not detached) and it was pulled back and swallowed, or if phlegm comes into the mouth and is swallowed (no matter the amount), the fast will not be broken. However, since these are repulsive things, one should avoid them. (Alamgiri)

🟢 Does eating forgetfully break the fast?
If someone was eating forgetfully and spat out the morsel immediately upon remembering, or was eating before dawn and spat it out as soon as it became morning, the fast is not broken. If it was swallowed (after remembering/morning), the fast is broken and Kaffarah is mandatory in both cases. (Alamgiri)

🟢 Does swallowing a fly break the fast?
If a fly enters the throat on its own, the fast does not break. But if it is swallowed intentionally, the fast will be broken. (Alamgiri)

🟢 Does swallowing a small amount of something break the fast?
If something the size of a sesame seed was chewed and went down the throat with saliva, the fast does not break. However, if its taste is felt in the throat, the fast will break. (Fath al-Qadir)

🟢 Does vomiting break the fast?
If a "mouthful" was vomited intentionally while remembering the fast, the fast is broken (whether some of it went back into the throat or not). If the vomit was less than a mouthful, the fast is not broken. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🟢 Does involuntary vomit returning break the fast?
If vomiting occurred involuntarily and it was a mouthful and the person returned it (even if an amount equal to a chickpea went down the throat), the fast is broken. If it was not a mouthful, the fast does not break even if it went back or was returned intentionally. (Rad al-Muhtar etc.)

🟢 Does phlegm in vomit break the fast?
If phlegm comes out during vomiting, whether intentionally or involuntarily, the fast does not break. (Alamgiri)

⚠️ Makruh (Disliked) Matters

🟡 Is it permissible to taste or chew something while fasting?
It is Makruh for a fasting person to taste or chew something without a valid excuse. An example of an excuse for tasting is if a woman's husband is ill-tempered and the salt in the pot being more or less would cause his anger—then there is no harm in tasting. An excuse for chewing is if an infant is too small to eat bread and there is no soft food, nor is there a woman in her period or any other non-fasting person available to chew it for the child—then chewing bread for the child is not Makruh. (Durr-e-Mukhtar etc.)

🟡 Is it permissible to taste something for purchasing?
If something is bought and it is necessary to taste it (otherwise there would be a loss), there is no harm in tasting; otherwise, it is Makruh. Tasting means placing it on the tongue to check the flavor and then spitting it out; nothing should reach the throat. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🌙 Rulings for Suhoor and Iftar

🟢 Ruling on delaying Suhoor:
Having Suhoor and delaying it is a Sunnah and a source of reward, but it should not be delayed so much that doubt arises about the start of morning. (Alamgiri)

🟢 Ruling on xhastening Iftar:
It is Sunnah to hasten Iftar, but one should only break the fast when there is a strong assumption that the sun has set. If the Muezzin has given the Athan or the Iftar has been announced by some other method, but it is cloudy, one should not rush into Iftar. (Durr-e-Mukhtar)

🟢 What is the best thing to break the fast with?
Fresh dates; if not available, then dry dates; otherwise, it is better to break the fast with water. (Rad al-Muhtar)
