🕌 Rulings of Witr Prayer
Witr prayer is Wajib (obligatory) and its status is very close to Fard. Therefore, if Witr prayer is missed for any reason, making up (Qaza) for it becomes obligatory. When performing the Qaza of Witr, Dua-e-Qunoot must also be recited, regardless of which supplication is read. However, during Qaza, the hands should not be raised for the Takbeer before Qunoot, especially when praying in front of people, because they may become aware of the person's shortcoming.

🔹 Ruling on Performing Witr While Sitting
Witr prayer cannot be performed while sitting without a valid excuse. If a person intentionally performs Witr while sitting without a legitimate reason, the prayer will not be valid. However, if standing is not possible due to illness, weakness, or any valid Shari excuse, then performing it while sitting is permissible and the prayer will be valid.

🔹 Rak‘ahs and Recitation Method of Witr
Witr prayer consists of three Rak‘ahs. In each Rak‘ah, reciting Surah Al-Fatiha along with another Surah is Wajib. If a person leaves adding a Surah in any Rak‘ah, the prayer will become necessary to repeat. Therefore, special care must be taken regarding recitation in Witr.
🔹 Method of the First Qa‘dah in Witr
In the first Qa‘dah of Witr, one should recite only At-Tahiyyat and then stand up. Do not recite Durood Shareef nor end with Salam, because the method of Witr resembles the Fard of Maghrib. If someone mistakenly recites Durood, the prayer will still be valid, but caution should be observed in the future.

🔹 Takbeer and Dua-e-Qunoot in the Third Rak‘ah
In the third Rak‘ah, after completing recitation and before going into Ruku, raise the hands up to the shoulders and say Allahu Akbar just as in Takbeer-e-Tahreemah. Then fold the hands and recite Dua-e-Qunoot. Reciting Dua-e-Qunoot is Wajib; however, it is not necessary to recite a specific supplication, and any Masnoon dua may be read.

🔹 What If Someone Does Not Remember Dua-e-Qunoot?
One who does not remember Dua-e-Qunoot should try to memorize it, because reciting the complete supplication is the Sunnah method. Until it is memorized, the following alternatives may be recited:
- Allahumma Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah…
- If this is not memorized: Allahummaghfir li (three times)
- If this too is not known: Ya Rabb (three times)
In all these cases, the Wajib will be fulfilled. Similarly, reciting Surah Ikhlas also fulfills the obligation of Witr, but it is better to memorize the original Dua-e-Qunoot.

🌙 Rulings of Sunnah and Nafl Prayers
The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever among the Muslims prays twelve Rak‘ahs daily for the sake of Allah besides the obligatory prayers, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise: four before Dhuhr, two after Dhuhr, two after Maghrib, two after Isha, and two before Fajr.”
Reference: (Muslim Shareef)
🔹 Rule of Four Rak‘ah Sunnah with One Salam
The Sunnah prayers that consist of four Rak‘ahs (such as the Sunnah of Dhuhr) must be performed with one Salam, meaning all four Rak‘ahs are completed together and Salam is given at the end. If someone performs them in two sets of two Rak‘ahs, the Sunnah Mu’akkadah will not be properly fulfilled and must be repeated.
Reference: (Durr Mukhtar)
🔹 Rule of Qa‘dah in Sunnah Mu’akkadah
In the first Qa‘dah of four Rak‘ah Sunnah Mu’akkadah, only At-Tahiyyat should be recited. If Durood Shareef is recited by mistake, Sajdah Sahw should be performed because it is close to leaving a Wajib. In these Sunnahs, when standing for the third Rak‘ah:
- Do not recite Subhanak Allahumma
- Do not recite Ta‘awwuz
However, in Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah or Nafl prayers:
- Reciting Durood in Qa‘dah is recommended
- Reciting Subhanak Allahumma and Ta‘awwuz in the third Rak‘ah is recommended
All these are Mustahabb and rewarding.

🔹 Method and Virtue of Performing Nafl While Sitting
It is permissible to perform Nafl prayer while sitting. When sitting, one should sit in the posture of Tashahhud and fold the hands on the chest during recitation. However, performing Nafl while standing is more virtuous and carries greater reward. According to Hadith:
“The prayer of one who sits is half of the prayer of one who stands.”
The two Nafl prayed after Witr carry the same ruling.

🔹 Ruling of Congregational Taraweeh
Taraweeh prayer in congregation is Sunnah Mu’akkadah and special care should be taken in Ramadan to perform it. Leaving it without excuse is not appropriate. Taraweeh consists of twenty Rak‘ahs performed with ten Salams, meaning Salam is given after every two Rak‘ahs.
Reference: (Radd al-Muhtar)
🔹 Performing Taraweeh While Sitting Without Excuse
Performing Taraweeh while sitting without a valid excuse is Makrooh, because Taraweeh is originally performed in the standing position. According to some jurists, Taraweeh performed without standing and without excuse is not even valid. Therefore, one should stand whenever possible.

🔹 Method for Women to Recite Taraweeh from Surahs
If women perform Taraweeh at home, they may recite using Surahs. An easy method is to start from Alam Tara Kayfa and continue sequentially toward the end of the Qur’an so that the order of Rak‘ahs remains organized. Reciting Surah Ikhlas after Surah Fatiha in every Rak‘ah is also permissible, especially when a large portion of the Qur’an is not memorized.

⏰ Rulings of Qaza Prayer
🔹 Missing Prayer Due to Sleep or Forgetfulness
If a prayer is missed due to sleep or forgetfulness, performing its Qaza is obligatory. As soon as one wakes up or remembers, the prayer should be offered immediately, provided it is not a Makrooh time. Unnecessary delay may become sinful.
Reference: (Radd al-Muhtar)
🔹 Waking a Sleeper or Reminding the Forgetful
If someone knows that a person is sleeping at prayer time or has forgotten, it is obligatory to wake or remind them. This falls under enjoining good and assisting in righteousness.
Reference: (Radd al-Muhtar)
🔹 Principle of Performing Qaza According to Original State
A missed prayer must be performed according to the state in which it was missed. For example, if a four-Rak‘ah prayer was missed during travel, only two Rak‘ahs will be prayed later even when resident. If it was missed while resident, four Rak‘ahs will be performed.
Reference: (Alamgiri)
🔹 Order Between Fard Prayers and Witr
Maintaining sequence between the five Fard prayers and Witr is necessary: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and finally Witr. If someone knowingly breaks the order, it is impermissible and the prayer must be repeated.
Reference: (Alamgiri)
🔹 When Qaza Prayers Become Numerous
If missed prayers exceed five, maintaining sequence is no longer necessary. For ease, one may perform whichever Qaza prayer they wish first.
Reference: (Radd al-Muhtar)
🔹 If Qaza Was Forgotten and Current Prayer Was Offered
If someone forgot about a Qaza prayer and offered the current prayer, the current prayer will be valid. However, if they remember during the prayer that Qaza is due, the current prayer will not be valid.
Reference: (Alamgiri)
🔹 Sequence When Current Prayer May Be Missed
If there is fear that performing Qaza first will cause the current prayer time to expire, then the current prayer should be offered first and Qaza later, because the current prayer has a limited time.
Reference: (Hidayah)
🔹 Qaza After Menstruation
If a woman misses one prayer and then menstruation begins, after becoming pure she should first perform that Qaza prayer and then the current prayer, provided there is sufficient time.
Reference: (Alamgiri)
🔹 Importance of Qaza Compared to Nafl
Qaza prayers are more important than Nafl. Therefore, when intending to pray Nafl, it is better to perform Qaza instead to clear one’s responsibility. However, Sunnah Mu’akkadah should not be abandoned without reason.
Reference: (Radd al-Muhtar)
🔹 Intention and Ease in Qaza Prayers
The intention for Qaza may be made as:
“I intend to pray the first Fajr/Dhuhr/Asr that I missed.”
Facilitations when many Qaza prayers are due:
- Recite Tasbeeh of Ruku and Sajdah once
- In the third and fourth Rak‘ah, say Subhan Allah three times instead of full recitation
- Recite a short Durood at the end
- In Witr, say Rabbighfir li instead of full Qunoot
These concessions are mentioned for ease when there are many Qaza prayers.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Is it permissible to pray Witr while sitting without any illness?
A: No. Witr is Wajib (obligatory), and like Fard prayers, it cannot be performed while sitting without a valid Shari excuse (such as severe illness or inability to stand). Doing so intentionally makes the prayer invalid.
Q2: What if I forget to recite Dua-e-Qunoot in Witr prayer?
A: If you forget Dua-e-Qunoot and remember it before going into Ruku, you should recite it. If you remember after Ruku, you must perform Sajdah Sahw at the end of the prayer to make it valid.
Q3: Can women perform Taraweeh prayer at home using short Surahs?
A: Yes. Women can easily perform Taraweeh at home. If they haven't memorized the full Quran, they can recite any Surahs they know (e.g., from Surah Fil to Surah Nas) in sequence or repeat Surah Ikhlas.
Q4: How should I prioritize between Qaza prayers and Nafl prayers?
A: Qaza prayers are a debt (Farz/Wajib) that you owe to Allah. Therefore, fulfilling Qaza prayers is much more important than offering Nafl. It is recommended to perform Qaza prayers in place of extra Nafl to clear your responsibility.
